Publishing Tapestry 5 in Action Book On My Own
Some weeks ago I have been informed by Manning Publications that the Tapestry 5 in Action book is canceled. Based on MEAP sales Manning did a sales forecast. It looks like the book is financially not attractive enough.
As you can imagine, this news made me upset. I was working on the book for about 8 month now. The half of the book (almost 250 pages) is already finished and I was looking forward to see the book in a final shape. After the MEAP has been started, I’ve got a lot of positive feedback regarding the book. It looks like the readers like the book’s content very much.
Manning’s decision was more than a surprise for me. After being upset for a couple of days I changed my opinion about Manning’s decision. Now I believe that this cancelation is the best thing that could happen to the book. I decided to publish the book on my own (probably on lulu.com). First of all, it is much more financially attractive for me. Secondly, I’ll be able to publish as many editions as I wish. I can update the book’s content every time a new Tapestry version is released. The only disadvantage is that lulu.com doesn’t provide something like an “early access program” so that the readers will need to wait until the book is finished.
If you was one of the MEAP customers who bought the Tapestry 5 in Action book, there is no reason to be sad. The book is going to be published. I promise you.

I just bought the MEAP yesterday and got notified it was cancelled last night. Its a shame I didnt decide to buy it a couple of weeks earlier. Good luck with publishing the rest of the book and hope to see it soon.

That’s a great idea, apart from the fact that Manning already paid the editorial costs right?
Too bad about the Manning contract. I purchased the MEAP also and will request a refund. You can count on my order once the book is published on Lulu. The ability to publish frequent updates as Tapestry evolves is a big plus IMO.

I think it would better this book be published by pragprog.com or pactpub.com, or apress.com ,

I was happy that the book would published after five -six months.
I’m waiting it again to be published in any way.
My team is choosing a new Web Framework and the timing couldn’t be worse. We would have bought quite a few copies.
Any idea on a release date as it sounds like you are close to finishing?
Well, the half of the book is already done. Now that I don’t depend on Manning, I hope to finish the second half of the book faster. I think that beginning of 2012 is realistic.
I’ll also try to find some way to provide an early access to the readers. Maybe I should reduce the number of the chapters for the first revision of the book.
Just starting out with Tapestry so I’ll be keeping an eye out for this book!

Sorry to hear that your book didn’t work out with Manning. However, as you said, it is perhaps a good thing because you have taken over full control of the destiny of your book. I wish you the best! PS I have published on Lulu and would be happy to share my experience if you have any questions.
As for Manning, I am very disappointed with them and have stopped purchasing MEAPs altogether. A few years ago it was nice, they would update chapters consistently and the final book would be available in good time.
Nowaways, books are in MEAP for years – YEARS! 2, 3 years or more – and still not finished. That is absolutely ridiculous. I obtained refunds for all the MEAPs that I had purchased and will only purchase if final book is available.
I don’t know what’s going on over there at Manning, but it’s not pretty.

I actually ordered two book, now that you dont give up, and continue to write i will at least by same ammount so just let me know when finished Igor!

I’m wondering if final version of the book, will touch any aspects of Tapestry 5.3? In any case I’ll buy the book as soon as it is ready.
Yes, the first edition of the book will cover 5.3. I’m also planning to release a new edition every time a new Tapestry release is available.
